WONDER: A resilient WDM packet network for metro applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents the architecture of a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical packet network, called WONDER, that was designed and prototyped in the PhotonLab at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. The design and implementation of the WONDER network aim to assess the effectiveness of optical technologies with respect to electronic ones, trying to identify an optimal mix of the two technologies. The architecture shows interesting resilience properties that enable the design of fast fault-recovery schemes. In this paper, we present the physical topology and node structure of the prototype, and discuss the implementation and performance of a fault-recovery algorithm. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Experimental WDM Packet Networks for Metro Applications: the RingO and Wonder Projects
This paper presents the activities carried out at Politecnico di Torino, Italy, on an advanced ring-based WDM optical packet network suitable for a high-capacity metro environment. We present two alternative architectural designs, and elaborate on the effectiveness of optical with respect to electronic technologies, trying to identify an optimal mix of the two technologies [1]. The first presen...

متن کاملWavelength Reuse for Efficient Packet-Switched Transport in an AWG Based Metro WDM Network
Metro WDM networks play an important role in the emerging Internet hierarchy; they interconnect the backbone WDM networks and the local access networks. The current circuit-switched SONET/SDH-over-WDM-ring metro networks are expected to become a serious bottleneck — the so-called metro gap — as they are faced with an increasing amount of bursty packet data traffic and quickly increasing bandwid...

متن کاملRINGOSTAR – An Evolutionary Performance Upgrade of Optical Ring Networks
INTERNET traffic volumes are growing and require the transmission capacity of the underlying infrastructure to be continuously extended. A closer look at this infrastructure reveals that the Internet architecturally relies on a three level hierarchy consisting of backbone networks, metropolitan area networks, and local access networks. The national or international backbone networks will provid...
